Questions About BOTOX®

Chicago, Illinois Wrinkle Treatment - Facial Rejuvenation

How does BOTOX® work?

As you age, the repeated facial expressions that you make can become “etched” into your face by overactive facial muscles, creating what are termed dynamic wrinkles. Some examples of dynamic wrinkles include:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Frown lines
  • Lip wrinkles

BOTOX® fights these wrinkles by using botulinum toxin to block the specific nerve impulses that are causing your facial muscles to tighten and contract. Once these muscles are relaxed, the wrinkles they are causing in your overlying skin will soften and smooth out. BOTOX® is notably different from other cosmetic treatments – such as Radiesse™ or Restylane® – because it does not “fill” wrinkles or plump up your skin; instead, it allows your skin to flatten out.

How long does BOTOX® last?

Typically, BOTOX® results will last three to four months after the initial treatment. Those that want to maintain their reduced wrinkles usually have Botox injections every three months the first year, every four months the next two years and then the time between injections can slow down significantly. At the first sign of  that wrinkles start to re-appear, you can obtain a follow-up treatment. This occurs because your muscles have become partially “trained” to stay in a relaxed state.

What are the side effects of BOTOX®?

BOTOX® has an exceptional safety profile, which is a main reason why it continues to remain the top non-surgical cosmetic procedure performed in America every year. No permanent side effects have been associated with BOTOX®. Temporary issues – including numbness, bruising, and headaches – are usually minor and rare. About 1% of all patients will experience over-relaxation of the muscles in areas where treatment was not intended, but this side effect will also resolve itself given enough time.

Are BOTOX® injections right for me?

You should be between the ages of 18 and 75 in order to be a good candidate for BOTOX®. If you are pregnant, you should not undergo treatment. Additionally, some neurological disorders come with an increased risk of BOTOX® complications, including:

  • Lambert-Eaton syndrome
  • ALS
  • Myasthenia gravis

Based on your medical history, Dr. Golden can help you determine whether or not you are a good candidate for BOTOX®.
