3 Common Eye Emergencies

If you suspect any of these eye problems, you should go to the emergency room or consult your eye professional immediately.
Scratched Eye (Corneal Abrasion)
A corneal abrasion is very uncomfortable and usually results from getting poked in the eye or by getting sand or dirt in the eye, scratching the cornea. It can cause eye redness, eye watering or sensitivity to light. If you think you might have scratched your eye, don’t rub it. It can make it worse.
Foreign Object in the Eye
This can be small pieces of glass, a fish hook or anything else that gets into your eye. It can cause severe damage and should be dealt with immediately. Metal objects and quickly form a rust ring and develop scar tissue. Don’t try to pull it out or remove it. You can make it much worse. This requires an immediate visit to an ER.
Chemicals in the Eye
If you’ve splashed a chemical in your eye, or sprayed something into it, you’ll also want to head to the ER. But first, spend about 15 minutes gently washing your eye out with barely warm water. A steady stream of water is needed to remove as much as possible and minimize damage. Be sure to let the doctor treating you know what it was that got into your eye.
