If your eyes are red, gritty, scratchy, burning or feeling irritated, you may be suffering from dry eye.  Symptoms tend to worsen towards the end of the day and can also increase in dry or windy climates.

Other dry eye causes can include:

  • Aging and menopause
  • Medications, antihistamines, beta-blockers and birth control pills
  • Problems with the eyes closing, which cause them to dry out, such as stroke or Bell’s palsy
  • Contact lenses, refractive surgery, weather conditions and other factors impacting eye health
  • Heat and environmental conditions
  • Eye diseases such as Sjogren’s syndrome, collagen vascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis or lupus

An eye examination by an ophthalmologist can usually determine whether dry eyes are present.  If you believe you may be suffering from dry eyes, please contact Doctors for Visual Freedom in Chicago for an appointment.
