Diabetic_Eye_Exam.jpgDid you know that a simple eye exam can sometimes catch the early signs of diabetes?

Not many people are aware of this helpful fact.  Diabetes, you see, often causes problems in the retina.

A routine eye exam can reflect many aspects of a person’s health.  Bleeding, hemorrhaging and leaking fluids, also known as microvascular abnormalities, can all be indicators of diabetes. If new blood vessel growth is seen during the exam, this may also indicate diabetes.  The hemorrhages can cause permanent damage and vision loss.

Those who already have been diagnosed with diabetes can benefit from an eye exam.  Generally people with controlled diabetes do much better physically than those who have uncontrolled diabetes.

If signs of diabetes are seen on an eye exam, it is advisable to have your blood sugar checked.  Detection of possible diabetes is yet another reason to always have a yearly eye examination.
