CK Eligibility
Chicago, Illinois
Although conductive keratoplasty, usually called CK or NearVision CK, is a less-invasive procedure than laser eye surgery, it is surgery. As with any eye surgery you must qualify for this procedure. Dr. Golden determines your CK eligibility after he does a thorough examination of your eyes and general health. He considers how your medical history, medications, lifestyle, work requirements and need for corrective lenses will affect your results and whether this is the best solution for you.
Eligible Patients
You could be a good CK candidate if you:
- Have good vision without glasses either naturally, post refractive procedure, or post implant surgery.
- Are over age 40 and need glasses to see up close.
- Are tired of wearing reading glasses.
Other Eligibility Factors
Monovision. CK may eliminate your need for reading glasses for most small near objects. One common application of CK is to induce monovision. Dr. Golden treats your non-dominant eye to create nearsightedness and leaves your dominant eye with good distance vision. Some people do not adjust to monovision as well as others, but those who do adjust will meet this qualification for CK.
To determine if this is the best solution for you, Dr. Golden may give you a contact lens for one eye prescribed for reading to wear in your non-dominant eye for a few days. One eye is then focused for near vision giving monovision, allowing you time to adjust to this new way of focusing without glasses. A contact lens is not a perfect example of blended vision, as the distance vision in the treated CK eye is typically better than would be achieved with true monovision as is seen with a contact lens.
Health. You should be in good general health with none of the disqualifiers listed below.
Eligibility Disqualifying Factors
You should be free of certain chronic diseases and disorders such as:
- History of herpes zoster or herpes simplex keratitis, even if inactive for a long time
- Eye diseases such as glaucoma, untreated cataracts, retinopathy, thin corneas, keratoconus, crossed or wandering eyes, blindness in one eye, previous eye injury, or corneal scarring.
- Nearsightedness
- Unstable distance eye prescription
- Autoimmune disease
- Taking steroids or immunosuppressant drugs
- Connective tissue disorder
- You would also need to not be pregnant or lactating.
Be sure to have your medical history and medications list available when you come in for your ophthalmologic exam. This information will not only help Dr. Golden decide if CK is right for you, but whether a better procedure or option is available to meet your needs.
