This semi-permanent filler is a natural product that can effectively smooth away lines and wrinkles with hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in your skin. Because it replicates a substance found in your body, Juvederm™ carries no risk of allergic reaction.
Unlike other injectable fillers, Juvederm gel is smooth and clear, so you will not experience clumps or bumps that some patients have experienced with older injectables.
Uses for Juvederm™
Juvederm is a cosmetic treatment most effective for:
- Reducing the downturned creases or “frown lines” at the corners of your mouth
- Plumping up the folds that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth
- Fixing the appearance of scars
- Filling in the "11s," or wrinkles that run vertically between your eyebrows
- Correcting the hollows or bags under your eyes
- Plumping thin or aging lips
How Juvederm™ Works
As we age, our skin loses elasticity, and the actions of our facial muscles begin to create wrinkles and creases. The hyaluronic acid that is naturally present in your skin maintains the hydration and volume of your tissues. In medicine, this substance has been used to alleviate joint pain and treat wounds. Hyaluronic acid was first used for facial rejuvenation in Europe in 1996. The hyaluronic acid in Juvederm™ works by adding volume to your skin, thereby reducing the evidence of folds and fine lines.
You will be able to see the results of your Juvederm™ treatment immediately. With time, your body will begin to absorb the hyaluronic acid, so additional treatments will be required. Juvederm™ typically lasts between six and nine months, but some patients report that the effects of this injectable last up to a year.
What to Expect During Recovery
You can expect to resume your normal activities the day after treatment. Some patients may experience:
- Temporary bruising
- Mild inflammation
- Swelling and redness
- Skin firmness
- Discomfort around the injection site
These symptoms often pass within 24 to 48 hours. The injections are performed under local anesthesia.
