LASIK Undercorrection and Overcorrection
Chicago, Illinois
Undercorrection and overcorrection are two possible LASIK complications experienced by patients. This simply means that some degree of refractive error remains after your LASIK eye surgery procedure. Undercorrection and overcorrection are most often caused by differences in the way a person’s eyes heal after surgery.
The LASIK technology we use at Doctors For Visual Freedom significantly reduces the overall risk of overcorrection and undercorrection. The precision allowed by the VISX Custom WaveFront Laser system is unparalleled. This type of complication occurs more often in patients who are slow healers or who have very high prescriptions.
How a High Prescription Can Affect LASIK Results
After a thorough pre-surgical evaluation, Dr. Golden can discuss with you how your prescription may affect the outcome of your LASIK procedure. Because of the skill of our Chicago LASIK eye surgeons and the state-of-the-art technology we use, high prescriptions can still be effectively corrected using LASIK, but you will be more at risk of overcorrection and undercorrection.
The effects of overcorrection and undercorrection may or may not be noticeable. For example, if your prescription was -10.00 diopters before LASIK, and you develop a 10% undercorrection, your post-LASIK prescription will be -1.00 diopters (or 20/40 vision). Because of this, you might find that you still experience a degree of nearsightedness.
However, if your prescription before LASIK was only -1.00 diopters, then a 10% undercorrection would leave you with a post-LASIK prescription of -0.10 diopters, which would likely not affect your vision at all.
Chicago LASIK eye surgeon, Dr. Golden will discuss each of these variables with you in detail.
Treating Overcorrection and Undercorrection
If overcorrection and undercorrection do occur, and do affect the quality of your vision, they can be treated through a LASIK follow-up procedure. However, if you have corneas that are too thin or too steep, you might be unable to undergo an enhancement procedure. Dr. Golden will warn you of this before performing your initial LASIK eye surgery procedure so you can factor this information into your decision-making process.
