Improved Quality of Life Following LASIK
Chicago, Illinois
Most people who have LASIK put it in the top five most important events in their lives.
What better reason to undergo any surgery than to improve some aspect of your life? Likewise, you should expect an improved quality of life following LASIK. While this is true, you should also prepare for laser eye surgery by setting realistic expectations based upon your personal medical condition and potential for visual improvement.
Assuming Dr. Golden’s exam and evaluation shows that you are a good LASIK candidate, LASIK has the potential to improve the quality of your life in several areas.
What Can You Expect From LASIK?
Improved vision. Note that this means improved vision and is no guarantee of perfect vision. One of the many LASIK misconceptions is that this treatment will always result in 20/20 vision. Remember that 20/20 vision is what the average person sees at 20 feet. While it is common for patients to experience LASIK corrected vision of at least 20/40 (legal to drive without glasses) LASIK has been known to correct vision to better than 20/20. Other patients won’t achieve 20/40 corrected vision in both eyes, but may still experience a significant improvement in their ability to carry out daily activities. If Dr. Golden does believe that you are a good candidate for LASIK, he will make sure that you understand the reason and he will suggest alternatives. He never recommends LASIK unless he thinks that an individual is a perfect candidate.
Good Vision and Quality of Life
Personal activities. Good vision is necessary for so many daily activities like reading, driving, writing, cooking, or shopping, not to mention being able to work for a living. Those who have lost clarity of vision know how this can affect the quality of their lives. Glasses and contact lenses are wonderful solutions, but they do require care and maintenance. Misplacing or breaking them can create a serious inconvenience, even if only a temporary one. Freedom from having to wear and care for them is a nice improvement to your quality of life.
Career life. Dr. Golden knows how important your vision is to your career. Few jobs could be done with poor vision. Advances in laser technology have made this class of surgeries safe even for people in careers that formerly prohibited laser surgery. One example would be athletes who could not wear glasses on the job. Other careers now permit LASIK surgery including police and pilots whose vision is obviously critical, or firefighters who would find glasses and even contact lenses potentially dangerous on the job. Even astronauts are candidates for LASIK.
