Who is Eligible for PRK Laser Surgery?

Chicago, Illinois

PRK, or Photorefractive Keratectomy, is a laser refractive surgical treatment originally suited for patients suffering from myopia or nearsightedness, although recent advances now also allow it to effectively treat farsightedness and astigmatism as well. Upon evaluation by an ophthalmologist, a number of qualifying criteria will be checked:

  • Normal ocular health
  • Age 18 or older
  • At least a year of stable eye exams
  • Between -1.00 and -12.00 diopters of myopia (your doctor will determine this)
  • Not currently pregnant or expecting to be pregnant in the near future
  • Understands the possible risks of the procedure as well as the benefits
  • Review of allergies which may complicate recovery or contribute to dry eye

Pre-existing conditions which may render PRK an unwise treatment include:

  • Ulceration or other disease of the cornea
  • Degenerative disorders of the cornea such as Keratoconus
  • Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus or other autoimmune disease
  • Intolerance to steroids

PRK has been used for over 20 years, and with the use of more modern lasers and techniques, PRK is much easier and involves much less discomfort than in the past. Certain individuals who are likely to receive trauma to their eyes postoperatively may be better candidates for PRK than LASIK.

The most reliable assessment of eligibility is a comprehensive consultation with an eye care professional experienced in laser refractive surgery. Freedom from glasses and contact lenses is possible for patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism that can last a lifetime.
