Eye Strain
Chicago, Illinois Ophthalmologist
Eye strain – technically called asthenopia – is a common problem that can occur in one or both of your eyes. In most cases, eye strain can easily be treated by resting your eyes on a regular basis. Sometimes, however, eye strain can be a sign of a more significant underlying problem, such as dry eye syndrome, a refractive error or even an imbalance in your eye muscles.
If you are experiencing frequent eye strain, Chicago ophthalmologist Dr. Golden can help you pinpoint the cause and provide the treatment you need for relief from your symptoms.Symptoms of Eye Strain
Computer vision syndrome is the leading cause of eye strain. If you spend over two hours per day in front of a computer screen, your eyes will inevitably become overtaxed. Any visual task that involves focusing for long periods of time on small details at a close range can lead to eye strain.
Some of the most common symptoms of eye strain include:- Pain around your eyes
- Headaches
- Dry or burning sensation in the eyes
- Sore neck
- Sore back
- Blurred vision or double vision
Eye strain usually contributes to a more general feeling of exhaustion. People with chronic eye strain often have difficulty concentrating, or are prone to irritability.
How to Avoid Eye Strain
If you have a job that involves a lot of close visual work, the best strategy for avoiding eye strain is to take frequent breaks from your task. Performing eye exercises every 20 minutes can be a big help. Also try to blink on a regular basis. Failing to blink because you are concentrating intently on a task can make eye strain worse. Even just closing your eyes for a couple of minutes every hour can significantly reduce your overall symptoms.
