Common Chicago Glaucoma Treatments

Chicago, Illinois

Glaucoma means that the pressure is too high in the eye and that pressure pushes on the nerve in the back of the eye. With time, there is progressive death of that nerve. The nerve, called the optic nerve, is the telephone cable between the eye and the brain. The pressure from glaucoma causes loss of the neurons in the optic nerve that affect peripheral vision first and most people do not notice the damage from glaucoma until it is too late. There are no glaucoma symptoms from the most common form—open angle glaucoma. The eye is not red and there is generally no sensation of pressure. Two million people in the United States are known to have glaucoma and two million more are thought to have glaucoma but are not aware because there are no symptoms. Therefore, glaucoma is frequently referred to as the "sneak thief" of vision.
