LASIK Follow-up Treatments

Chicago, Illinois

While the vast majority of our patients at Doctors For Visual Freedom Laser Center are pleased with the final results from their LASIK surgery, there are some circumstances in which a follow-up treatment is necessary or desirable. There are a number of different factors that can contribute to a patient not getting the final results they were expecting including the way that you heal and medications or supplements that you may have started after surgery. Whatever the reason, we at Doctors For Visual Freedom Laser Center want you to be happy and will do everything possible to do so.

Follow-up Treatments

If needed and if it is safe, we will perform a LASIK enhancement for no charge.  This fine-tuning is typically performed three to four months after your initial procedure.  In general, Lasik enhancements are safer than the initial procedure because it is not necessary to make a new flap.  Usually we can gently lift the previously made flap and add a small amount of additional treatment.  Healing postoperatively is exactly like the first procedure and you will need to be careful not to touch your eyes during the first week of your healing period.

Reasons for a Follow-up Treatment

As a general rule, we don't recommend a follow-up treatment unless the patient has given his/her eyes time to heal and are, even then, left unable to perform necessary functions as a result of the surgery. These circumstances are normally evaluated on a case-by-case basis so please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may be having about your recovery. Although rare, here are some circumstances in which a follow-up treatment would be appropriate:

  • Flap complications: During surgery, a flap is made on the eye under which the laser does its work.  One of the most common avoidable complications is when people rub their eyes in the first week of their postoperative period, before the flap has a chance to fully seal down.  In that situation there can be wrinkles in the flap.  Most often these can be smoothed out, but sometimes it is necessary to go back to the operating room to lift the flap and smooth it out.  Sometimes sutures or surface laser treatment may be used in those that cause severe damage to their flaps.
  • Over/under correction: The amount of correction needed in your circumstances plays a role in whether or not there will be any over/under correction in the final results. A follow-up treatment can fix this problem, although the healing process will be lengthened.
  • Cornea issues: Very rarely, those with certain corneal problems may have surface cells grow under the flap.  Most of the time these cells will disappear on their own, but sometimes the flap may need to be lifted and the space between the flap and the surface of the cornea needs to be cleaned.  Some surgeons see this complication often and Dr. Golden is known for fixing such problems. It is very rare for this complication to occur to a patient of Doctors For Visual Freedom Laser Center.

At Doctors For Visual Freedom Laser Center we give only the most top quality care and attention to our patients, so there is only a very small chance of any of these issues happening after surgery at our office. If one of these situations were to arise we are willing to work with you to give you the visual freedom you deserve.
