Monovision With Laser Eye Surgery

Chicago, Illinois

Monovision is a technique used by ophthalmologists to reduce a person's dependency on reading glasses or bifocals. Although monovision can be achieved through the use of contact lenses, LASIK laser eye surgery can produce the same effect and free patients from a constant dependency on both glasses and contact lenses.

Reading Glasses and Presbyopia

As people enter their 40s and if you have good vision for distance, the need for reading glasses becomes almost universal. This is because the natural crystalline lenses in our eyes become firmer and enlarged as we mature, losing their ability to accommodate different ranges of focus. This loss of flexibility is part of a condition known as presbyopia.

If you cannot read without holding an item far away from you, you probably have presbyopia. Reading glasses help patients with presbyopia by providing a small amount of myopic (nearsighted) vision when worn, but they can be cumbersome and frustrating for many patients.

Treating Presbyopia With Monovision

For those patients who would like to avoid the need for bifocals, trifocals, or "readers" monovision correction with laser eye surgery can be a valuable alternative. Monovision involves correcting one of your eyes for near vision, and the other eye for distance vision. Your brain will then automatically decide which eye to use and when.  About half of people like monovision and the other half do not.  Laser eye surgeon, Dr. Golden, enjoys monovision with the ability to see for distance out of his right eye and excellent reading vision out of his left.

If you are not a good candidate for LASIK laser eye surgery, other Laser Vision Correction procedures can also be used to achieve monovision, including NearVision CK and PRK. After a thorough examination of your eyes, Dr. Golden will discuss your Laser Vision Correction options with you and recommend the procedure he thinks would best fit your needs.

LASIK Candidates Over Forty

In general, if you are over 40 years old and are considering any type of laser eye surgery, monovision will be an option discussed during your consultation. Patients over 40 usually need to make a choice between correcting both eyes for distance, which will still require some dependence on reading glasses for near vision or monovision correction, which would correct only one eye for distance, and the other for near vision.
